It takes courage to be a part of the SEA-Student Teacher Program. Participating student teachers must be ready physically, mentally and spiritually.
Physically in a sense that we should take care of ourselves because we will be living in a different place with different food, clothing, weather, behavior, laws, or culture as a whole. However, we will overcome our differences by respecting and allowing ourselves to understand their way of living.
Mentally ready in a sense that the student teachers must have the presence of mind in going to their destinations especially at the airport because I’ve been confuse with the terminal and some people tried to fool me. But I’m glad that I survived the challenge. Also, we must set our mind about the purpose of this practicum that we must achieve because it’s not focused on traveling.
Third, spiritually ready, this means that by faith, no matter what religion, we believe that they can do the practicum successfully.
Despite the language barrier and difference in culture, I realized that enjoyment of what we do in our practicum will lead us to understanding each other because we are connected at the heart and not in language.
I realized I improved in expressing myself in English so I felt better. Even so, I believe that there’s always a room for improvement and there are still blessings and opportunities to come to practice my teaching.
Overall, the program is a very good avenue for the student teachers of South East Asian countries specifically Thailand, Malaysia, Philippines and Indonesia to improve their teaching for a quality education that leads to a quality life for students, teachers and the community. I hope its success will continue even though 6th batch was closed, I believe it does not yet end. :):):)

Happy to let you know that I had the opportunity to share our Philippine culture to the students of SMAN Banjarmasin.
I felt that the students are very interested to learn something about our culture. I taught them about the our school Bengeut State University, our food, dances and music in our famous festvals( Strawberry, Panagbenga and Adivay). They asked questiones about some of the Philippines’ famous artist just like Daniel Padilla and Christian Bautista. But what they like most to hear is our Filipino language, so I said “magandang umaga” (Good morning), “mahal ko kayong lahat “ (I love you all) and others as an example. 🙂
I learned a lot of Bahasa Indonesia, terimah kasih banyak (thank you so much) for the Indonesian buddies, teachers and students . The jolly, smart and respectful students, teachers and buddies shared to me stories about the Dayak, about the Soto Banjar, about Sasirangan, their culture as a whole.
As a social studies teacher, I can read books, watch videos from you tube and search google about Indonesia’s’ Culture but I realized that experience is still my best teacher. The experience taught me not only knowledge but also meaningful lessons and appreciation of other culture., I also learned how to mingle with other people, especially our brothers and sisters who are Muslims.

“I believe that the goal of education is not only about giving of information but also character formation.”
The school of Sekolah Menengah Atas Negeri of Banjarmasin envisioned delivering a next generation who are devoted, character and self-wising. I realized that the teachers from this school are not only focusing on academics but modeling also good values. Teachers do their best in teaching the students which signifies being responsible. Listening to students opinion which signifies being respectful and correcting the students’ bad behavior which signifies being disciplined.
When teachers became a model of values, they integrate also that could be learned from the lesson. For example, I remember one of my students in Grade 12 once said that to promote peace as a student, they must give importance to the discussion and respect the opinion of the other students. It’s more satisfying for me to read this rather than a perfect score of a memorized quiz because the student is sincere to what she said.
As the good book says, children must be trained on the way they should go and when they are old, they will not depart from it. Thus, as a social studies teacher, I learned to integrate values that could be learned in my lesson so that my students will keep these until they grow which they could pass also in the next generation and I believe that the youth are the hope of one’s nation. It is for their personal growth, for their family and for their country as well, its for all the countries.

Before starting my class, my rule is only one word, PATIENCE!
I used this kind of rule so that the students will remember until the end of the class our rules, as I said before “emotion has the power of retention”. As a result, the flow of our lesson went very well.
For my motivation, I introduced the “4 PIC, 1 WORD”. It is showing four pictures that has only one meaning. This game will make the students analyzed and think deeply about the meaning of the pictures. The words are related to the topic “Positive and Negative Effects of Social Change. I’m glad that the students liked it very much and they are excited for they will get a reward. This game got their attention very well.
For the students’ activity, I used the partner learning to promote active participation. Each partner picked either positive effect of social change using the keywords (Industrialization, Urbanization, Modernization, and Globalization).The first five volunteers will present and will also get a reward card. I used reward card which comprised of Philippine peso as a way for them to participate and a remembrance also.
After this, together with the students, I asked the students what have we done and I summarize it also. To maximize the time, I instructed the students to make a reflection paper about what they will do or would like to do in order to avoid the negative consequences of social change. Before this, they watched a short video entitled “Man” that reflects the consequences of man’s greediness.
I gave also an opportunity to students to share their answers and I really appreciate their sincerity about what they learned and reflected.

First, the teacher gave me the syllabus and book with the help of my buddy for reading my lesson. The topic will be “Forms of Social Change based of structure and nature. I wrote my indicators based on the core and basic competences of sociology. I followed their process of teaching which includes greeting the students, checking the attendance, praying (different prayer),activity, discussion and conclusion. I used the collaborative teaching that teachers use in grade 12. This is a very good strategy because students interact actively with me.
They watched a video entitled “Social Change”, a review of the meaning of social change for 5 minutes.
For their activity, the students are grouped into five. They need to research the five forms of social change which are industrialization, modernization, urbanization, westernization and globalization. Give the meaning and examples for 30 minutes. Each grouped presented their answers in English by using google translate and I’m happy with their cooperation.
Making the Indonesian lesson plan is very challenging because its my first time to make it. On the other hand, it’s interesting because I will learn how to make their own lesson plan. The student teachers of Universitas Lambung Mangkurat helped me in the constructions so I did not worry much. The structure of lesson plan in the Philippines and Indonesia are different but both of the lesson plans target the cognitive, psycho-motor and affect. The affect that focuses on the emotion is more important because it stirs the values of the students.

I started to assist in Dra. Hadijahs IPS (Social Class) 4, grade 12 but we meet first Ibu Sussana, one of the vice head master , for fixing our schedules. I learned from ma’am Sussana how to be an enthusiastic teacher. Even though teaching is very exhausting sometimes, I must be motivated always so that my students will also be motivated to learn.
I learned Indonesian words of respect from her that I can use for my stay in the school. For example, “Pian” is for the older people and “Ikam” when they are younger.
After fixing our schedule, I was challenged because my task will be putting additional inputs and conclusion after the class discussed a topic or reported and they used Bahasa. Even so, I learned to be ready on what should I say .Ask help from my buddy who knows very well how to speak Bahasa and listen well to the students’ reports while they are in front. For example, the students reported about Social Change from Structure Side. They explained the meaning of social change and its positive and negative effect impact.
For my part, I used a graphic organizer to explain my thought and I’m happy that the students understood what I said during those times.

Independence Day is the day of freedom so for this week we enjoyed a lot of joining traditional Indonesian games with the English club buddies. Spin competition and many other games are so fun and exciting.
We also attended the scouting ceremony and I witnessed the patience and dedication of the students and teachers for their country. John F. Kennedy once said, “Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country.”
Aside from joining their traditional games, together with the students and some teachers, they sang Bahasa songs and they heard also how we sang our Filipino songs. We had a good time hearing each other and I learned to be a friendly teacher.
The experience was an instrument for a good relationship between a teacher and a student. So when teachers and students have established good communication outside the classroom. The students will not be afraid to express their own opinions and thoughts in class.
One of my students also shared about her experience about cyber bullying. She told me that it affected her studies much.So I talked to her and said that she needs to be careful on what she posed on her social media account. Honestly, she told me that she also wants to join the SEA-Teacher Project. I observed that she speaks well in English and smart as well so I encouraged her to try in the future.
In this generation, there are a lot of things to do with the help of technology. However, teachers should give pieces of advice to students and to be careful on what they post in social media. However, the use of technology is very helpful partner of teaching students just like making power point, downloading videos and others. It is also good to teach students to use the internet as a partner in studying just like reading books that are downloadable from google.
From August 6, 2018 until August 10, I observed different classes of Ibu Fithria ,Ibu Widiaswara , Ibu Henny, Miss Azimah and Dra. Hadijah. It’s an observation of Sociology and Geography of grade 10, 11 and 12. I was excited but at the same time nervous because it was my first time to face students with different culture, religion, and ethnicity.
In August 6, 2018 , we were given the opportunity to introduce ourselves to all of the students after their ceremony. I was glad for the warm welcome from Mr. Hym who first accompanied us until the end of our practicum in SMAN. We introduced ourselves using English, a little bit of Bahasa and Filipino.
Probably, the students have mistaken me to be a Thai because they greet me in Thai language. My buddy informed me that the SEA-Teachers deployed in this school before us came from Thailand.
Upon entering the classes, I saw very friendly, polite and smart students. For Grade 10, there is a good interaction between students and teachers. The students actively asked questions and the teacher is like a kind mother who has a sense of humor personality but has the authority as a teacher. I felt like they are family. Some of the teacher use also power point presentation which is their guide in discussing their lessons. They allow students to watch videos and view pictures.
For the higher years which are grade 11 and 12, they also use collaborative method. The teacher asked the students to research the assigned topic. It is usually done by group and will be presented the next meeting. They report by using the power point, giving their arguments, opinions and analysis. Then the teacher summarizes and concludes together what transpired in the discussion and reports. The students are participating actively and their having fun as well. Students really need the Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) just like for example making judgement on arguments concerning on the issues of the society today.
Actually, in my observation, the daily routine was a little bit the same with the Philippines. They do the following;

Teachers of social studies have a meeting every week to evaluate their lessons. Teachers have the opportunity to share what are their additional information on their lessons or the confusion that they encounter about a specific topic . For example, one talked about a difficulty in understanding her lesson so she asked the other teachers what they know about it. . According to the principles of teaching, other teachers can be a good source of information for the improvement of one teacher.It’s very nice to hear that teachers in this school help each other.
Observing the students and teachers of the school SMADA 2 Banjarmasin was very exciting and fun especially that it’s my first week. So see you in the next pages of my journey here as I share to you the experiences I remember in my head, but also in my heart!
Based on my research, the school follows the 2013 curriculum that is IT-based. It is integrated in teaching and in all facets of the school. Accordingly, the curriculum objective is creating productive, creative, and innovative through strengthening effective attitudes, skills and integrated knowledge for Indonesians. It is also proposed to produce Indonesian citizens with religious tolerance and mental health. It emphasized on the equality of spiritual, social, curiosity, creativity, knowledge and psycho-motor collaboration.
For senior high school, students are free to choose their major field and can take up to two cross-major subjects from other major fields as early as they enter senior high school. For example, a student from natural science major can take some subjects in social science or language/culture major, such as sociology or economy.
Ministry of Education and Culture has set up a website to oversee the implementation of the 2013 curriculum. The website provides details of curriculum implementation, including teachers guide and subject materials.
The curriculum is good because it is based on what the Indonesian people are, what they need and what the country envisions. The students also will have the chance to learn also other subjects aside from their major field which will help them to be flexible in teaching in the future. In addition, the IT-based curriculum is a tool to develop the students 20th Century Skills. For example, making a blog about our educational experiences just like what we do.However, students and teachers must not allow the control of technology in humans. Sometimes, it affects students negatively, for example, being lazy to take note in class. The good thing is students must use the technologies nowadays as a partner in learning and a partner for teaching on the part of teachers.
SMA Negeri 2 Banjarmasin or better known as SMADA was established in 1965 with the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia Number 009 / SK / B.1165-66, dated September 3, 1965. Public High School Banjarmasin 2 is one of the favorite high schools because its very famous and there are a lot of extra- curricular activities. It is also the largest in South Kalimantan in terms of student capacity and land buildings.
Banjarmasin State Senior High School 2 has a distinctive feature, namely the existence of Special Sports Classes (KKO) which opened in 2013. This Special Sports Class is intentionally made to facilitate gifted children in the field of sports so that they can develop their talents in the full sport field.
Supported by adequate facilities in accordance with educational standards, Banjarmasin 2 Public Middle School has been able to produce graduates who are able to have high competitiveness in various universities throughout Indonesia and become qualified human resources based on Imtak and Science and Technology.

Various facilities are owned by SMAN 2 Banjarmasin to support teaching and learning activities. This facilities includes:

There are 78 teachers and employees of the school helping one another in providing the best service to their 584 male and 614 female students. Also, they have 38 study group in the school.

There are 5 days of school learning in a week. Each subject has 45 minutes per lesson. The lesson starts at 7:30 am in the morning except Monday because they have a ceremony. Students may take a break after each class. Then, the classes end at 4:00 PM except Friday and if there are extra-curricular activities.
This school used materials in accordance with new 2013 Curriculum. Books are located in the library written by Indonesian authors. They also use Google for searching additional information.
The teacher follows the core and basic competences in writing the different indicators of their teaching plan or lesson plan. The assessments used are group reports and presentation to enhance the critical thinking of students.
Lambung Mangkurat University (ULM) is conveniently located in North Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan. It is the oldest and biggest university in Kalimantan, and one of the precious universities which becomes a society’s pride university in South Kalimantan. ULM has two campuses. One is in Banjarmasin, and the other one is in Banjarbaru. The campus in Banjarmasin is only 10 minutes from the downtown, and around 45 minutes from Syamsuddin Noor Airport. Another campus, which is located in Banjarbaru, is only 15 minutes from Syamsudin Noor Airport. ULM has the vision to be a leading and competitive university in wetland environment.
Currently, Lambung Mangkurat University has: 11 Faculties, 64 Undergraduate Programs (61 Bachelor’s Degree (S1) and 3 three- year-diploma (D3), 24 Post-Graduate Programs (23 Master’s and 1 Doctoral Program), 5 Profession Program and 3 Specialist Program, 992 Lecturers, 33694 Students and 4 International Students.
